Sleep

The integrating substrate — and the 24-hour clock that decides when everything else works.

The amplifier

The most concentrated maintenance window of the day.

No intervention in the Arete stack can compensate for chronically poor sleep — and excellent sleep amplifies every other one.

SleepThe primary regeneration protocol
AwakeREMLightDeep

Sleep is the primary regeneration protocol. We track clinical-grade staging (light / REM / deep / wake), the WHOOP multi-dimensional sleep score, and circadian alignment — bedtime consistency is as important as duration. Eight Sleep enables passive, non-wearable tracking; the cortisol awakening response links sleep quality to morning cognitive state. The same-night question: how do the house's hot/cold sequences change deep sleep that very night?

Consistency rivals duration

A regular bed and wake time — within ~30 minutes — is as important as the number of hours. Eight Sleep enables passive, non-wearable tracking; the cortisol awakening response ties sleep quality to the morning cognitive state.

The same-night question

Sleep is the integrating substrate — no intervention in the Arete stack can compensate for chronically poor sleep, and excellent sleep amplifies every other one. The house's signature research question: how do the hot/cold room sequences change deep sleep on the very same night they're performed?

Circadian biologyThe 24-hour architecture
06:0018:00

The 2017 Nobel Prize was awarded for the molecular mechanism of circadian rhythm. Clock genes (CLOCK/BMAL1 activate PER/CRY, which then suppress them) run a 24-hour feedback loop in every cell. Roughly 40% of the genome is expressed in a circadian pattern.

Master clock vs peripheral clocks

ClockLocationEntrained by
Master clock (SCN)Suprachiasmatic nucleus, hypothalamusLight, via the retinohypothalamic tract
Peripheral clocksEvery organ — liver, gut, muscle, heart, kidneyFood intake, exercise, temperature

Internal desynchrony

The defining circadian condition of modern life: the SCN says morning (via light) while peripheral clocks say evening (via late meals, shift work). This internal conflict is a major driver of metabolic disease, mood disorders, cognitive decline and accelerated biological aging — and a primary target for the house's timed protocols.
