The same-night question
Sleep is the integrating substrate — no intervention in the Arete stack can compensate for chronically poor sleep, and excellent sleep amplifies every other one. The house's signature research question: how do the hot/cold room sequences change deep sleep on the very same night they're performed?
The 2017 Nobel Prize was awarded for the molecular mechanism of circadian rhythm. Clock genes (CLOCK/BMAL1 activate PER/CRY, which then suppress them) run a 24-hour feedback loop in every cell. Roughly 40% of the genome is expressed in a circadian pattern.

Internal desynchrony
The defining circadian condition of modern life: the SCN says morning (via light) while peripheral clocks say evening (via late meals, shift work). This internal conflict is a major driver of metabolic disease, mood disorders, cognitive decline and accelerated biological aging — and a primary target for the house's timed protocols.
